The news that Bradford has become the first ever UNESCO City of Film was made official in June 2009.

Speaking about his hometown becoming the first ever UNESCO City of Film, Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy, said: “This is superb news for Bradford and is testimony to the City’s dedication to the film and media industry. Not only has Bradford played a crucial role in the story of cinema and helped shape its history, it has inspirational plans to enhance its future relationship with film, which will benefit both the local community and the industry at large. It is with pride, as a fellow West Yorkshireman, that we celebrate this UNESCO honour today.”

Bradford is now part of the UNESCO (United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Creative Cities Network. Bradford City of Film is a partnership between Bradford Council, the National Media Museum and Screen Yorkshire and plans are afoot to ensure the whole City embraces this outstanding achievement throughout 2010 and beyond. This is one more great accolade for the City to help it further promote itself and attract new investment in film and related industries.

Construction work on the new Jurys Inn Hotel and Provident Finance Headquarters complex in Bradford city centre is progressing smoothly and to schedule, according to the developer.

Regeneration chiefs say the £45m Southgate scheme, adjacent to the Thornton Road end of Centenary Square is another positive feature of Bradford’s skyline and stands as testimony to the ongoing regeneration and growing prosperity of the City. It is planned that the Provident staff will be in place in their prestigious new HQ by September.

The scheme is a continuing source of debate among observers in Bradford, some of whom believe the Council should not have risked the £6 million of taxpayers’ money it gave as a commercial loan to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project. Whilst others argue that with the Westfield development on hold at the other side of the City Centre, it would have been unthinkable to allow another prominent city centre project to stall, especially one that was destined to secure 1,000 jobs.
